Creating a safe and supportive environment for a loved one with dementia is one of the most important and compassionate steps we can take as family members and carers. At EA Mobility, we understand that a dementia-friendly bathroom isn’t just about installing new fixtures—it’s about thoughtfully designing a space that preserves dignity, promotes independence, and provides peace of mind.

A dementia-friendly bathroom considers the unique needs of individuals with memory loss, confusion, or mobility challenges, and aims to reduce the barriers they face in carrying out everyday tasks. With simple, careful design choices, we can help make these small spaces safer and more accessible, enabling loved ones to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

The Complexity of Bathroom Design

Despite being one of the smallest rooms in a home, designing a wet room for someone with dementia is surprisingly complex. It requires careful attention to tonal contrast, layout, and the choice of products. For example, surfaces like walls, floors, doors, and sanitary ware should contrast enough to be distinguishable—ideally achieving a minimum of 30 points on the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) scale. This helps prevent confusion and reduces the risk of falls or accidents.

Key Considerations for a Dementia-Friendly Bathroom

When planning an accessible bathroom, I always consider these seven essential factors:

  1. Protection Against Scalding – Installing thermostatic mixing valves and easy-to-use controls helps prevent accidental burns.
  2. Fall Protection – Non-slip flooring, grab rails, and supportive seating ensure safe movement and stability.
  3. Managing General Confusion – Clear signage, simple layouts, and familiar fixtures help reduce disorientation.
  4. Addressing Memory Loss – Colour contrasts and visual cues assist in recognising fixtures and locations of essentials.
  5. Supporting Retro Memory – Thoughtful design that resonates with past memories can create a comforting environment.
  6. Floor Colour Perception – Choosing the right floor colours to distinguish the floor from other surfaces helps prevent trips.
  7. Reducing Visual Confusion – Minimising clutter and using contrasting materials and fixtures reduce visual overload and confusion.
