Why Stand When You Can Relax? The Rise of the “Sit-Down Shower”
For many people, a shower is a race against time. You rush to wash before your legs get tired, your balance wobbles, or you feel breathless.
The common “quick fix” is to buy a cheap plastic stool online. But these can be unstable, clutter the floor, and make your beautiful bathroom look clinical.
At EA Mobility, we believe safety should be built-in, not added on. We don’t just sell seats; we design Sit-Down Showers. This means creating a wet room or enclosure where the seating, controls, and water flow are engineered around a seated user.
Here is how we integrate seated bathing into your full bathroom renovation.
Who Needs a Sit-Down Shower?
It isn’t just for the elderly. We design these spaces for clients with:
-
Balance Issues / Vertigo: Where closing eyes to wash hair causes dizziness.
-
Arthritis / Joint Pain: Where standing on a hard surface for 10 minutes is painful.
-
COPD / Breathlessness: Where the humidity and exertion of showering causes fatigue.
-
POTS / Fainting: Where standing still can trigger a fainting episode.
Why “Built-In” is Safer than “Add-On”
Why choose a professional installation over a catalogue chair?
-
Structural Stability: A loose stool can slip on wet tiles. A professional Fold-Down Seat is bolted into the structural wall (brick or reinforced timber). It cannot move.
-
Space Saving: A stool takes up floor space even when you aren’t using it. An integrated seat folds flat against the wall, leaving the shower clear for other family members.
-
Transfer Safety: With a built-in seat, we position grab rails at the exact height you need to push yourself up safely. A loose stool moves away from you when you try to stand.
The 3 Best Seating Options
1. The Integrated Fold-Down Seat (The Standard)
-
The Installation: During your bathroom renovation, we reinforce the wall behind the tiles. We then mount a high-quality seat at your specific knee height.
-
The Material: We use “Warm-Touch” materials (like phenolic wood or padded polyurethane). Unlike cheap plastic, these don’t shock your skin with cold when you sit down.
-
The Look: Chrome or matte black brackets ensure it looks like a design feature, not a hospital aid.
2. The Tiled Bench (The “Spa” Experience)
-
The Installation: We build a solid plinth (usually at the end of the shower area) and tile it to match the walls.
-
The Experience: It feels like a Turkish Hamam. It is solid, spacious, and has zero moving parts.
-
Luxury Tip: We can run the Underfloor Heating cable up inside the bench, giving you a heated seat while you shower.
3. The “Roll-In” Setup (For Wheelchair Users)
-
The Design: For users who cannot transfer to a wall seat, we design a Level Access Wet Room with a wide entry. This allows a specialist wheeled shower chair to be rolled directly over the toilet and into the shower without the user ever having to stand.
Crucial Design Details (The “E-E-A-T” Factor)
A seat is useless if you can’t reach the soap. When we design a Sit-Down Shower, we change the layout:
-
The Lower Riser Rail: If you sit down, a fixed overhead shower is too far away and the water cools down before it hits you. We install an extra-long riser rail or a second handset holder at seated shoulder height.
-
Accessible Controls: We position the thermostatic valve (on/off) within easy reach of the seat, so you don’t have to stand up to adjust the temperature.
-
Recessed Niches: We build shampoo shelves at seated height, so you don’t have to bend down to the floor to pick up bottles.
How Much Does a Sit-Down Shower Cost?
We do not sell shower seats as individual products. We sell complete Safety Solutions.
Installing a secure seat often requires removing tiles, reinforcing walls, and re-tanking the area to prevent leaks. Therefore, we install seats as part of a full shower or wet room adaptation.
-
Full Accessible Shower Installation: Typically £4,500 – £7,000+
-
Includes: Removal of old bath, anti-slip tray, safety glass, thermostatic shower, grab rails, and the integrated seat.
-
-
VAT Relief: If you require this adaptation due to a disability, the entire renovation (materials and labour) is likely VAT Exempt, saving you 20%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can you fit a seat to my existing tiled wall?
A: It is risky. We generally advise against drilling into existing tiles unless we know exactly what is behind them. If the wall is just plasterboard, a seat will rip out and cause injury. This is why we recommend installing seats as part of a proper renovation where we can reinforce the wall first.
Q: Will a seat fit in a small shower?
A: Yes. In a small bathroom, we use a Compact Fold-Down model. It protrudes only 10cm when closed, leaving the space clear for standing users.
Q: What is the weight limit?
A: Standard wall-mounted seats hold up to 127kg (20 stone). If you need more, we install Heavy Duty seats with legs, which transfer the weight to the floor. We will assess this during your survey.
