Andrew’s Story
When Occupational Therapist Danielle first met Andrew, she saw both the clinical challenges and the emotional toll. Living with Parkinson’s had gradually changed his mobility – he found himself stooping more, struggling to balance, and prop on nearby surfaces to support balance when walking.
The bathroom presented multiple challenges that affected safety and independence. The shower over the bath was inaccessible, while limited space made it difficult to use a walking aid, leading to reliance on uneven supports and a stooped posture. Steps into the bathroom created an additional barrier, and toilet transfers depended on pulling up rather than a safer, more natural push-to-stand movement. Maintaining balance while drying was difficult, and inconsistent flooring increased the risk of instability and “freezing” episodes.
The aim was to create a level access wetroom space, that promoted maintaining strength, supporting balance, with flexibility to meet future needs. Andrew’s main aim was to have ‘free access’ to all areas of the room, with sufficient rail support to eliminate the requirement to use a walking aid in the room.
We also had to consider future needs, focussing on maintaining safety and independence as needs progress, including using flooring similar in colour to the bedroom to reduce the risk of “freezing,” providing support for personal hygiene and toilet transfers, and enabling safer drying. The space also needed to accommodate a perching stool at the basin, allow sufficient turning space for a wheeled shower chair, and ensure the shower height was accessible for seated use.

Danielle worked closely with EA Mobility to design a bathroom adaptation that truly met Andrew’s needs. Every detail was considered. The adaptations focused on creating a safe, accessible, and future-proof environment. The floor was raised by 1ft to achieve level access, with flooring and thresholds selected in similar tones to reduce depth perception difficulties. Lighting was improved throughout to support long-term vision. Consistent heights were introduced across key features—including rails, a Gripo pole, basin, and Osprey toilet riser—to promote a more upright posture and natural movement patterns. A Geberit wash/dry toilet and compatible Osprey toilet riser were installed to support hygiene and safe transfers, while a body dryer and strategically placed Gripo pole enabled safer drying and mobility. A weight-bearing basin was also fitted at an appropriate height to allow for both standing use and future perching.
What made the difference was how EA Mobility brought Danielle’s vision to life. We didn’t just install equipment, we understood the “why” behind every recommendation. Small adjustments during installation ensured everything worked perfectly for Andrew’s height, movement, and changing condition.
The impact was immediate.
Andrew stood taller. With the right supports in the right places, his posture improved noticeably. Tasks that once took immense effort became smoother, safer, and – most importantly – his again. Tasks such as cleaning the bathroom floor, the Gripo support pole allowing him to access every part of the bathroom floor to mop whilst being supported.
For Danielle, it was exactly the outcome she hopes for with every patient: not just safety, but restored dignity and independence.
