The “Hidden” Adaptation: How to Make Bathing Safe Without Losing Style
For many people, the realization comes slowly. You start dreading the moment you have to swing your leg over the high side of the bath. The “wobble” on one leg feels dangerous.
Standard UK baths are typically 540mm high. For someone with mild arthritis, hip pain, or shorter stature, this height is a genuine fall hazard.
But what if you aren’t ready for a “medical-style” sit-in bath? What if you want your bathroom to still look like a beautiful family space?
The answer is a Low Level Bath (often called an Easy Access Bath).
At EA Mobility, we install these for clients who want safety disguised as luxury. Here is how they work.
What is a Low Level Bath?
It looks exactly like a standard modern bathtub, but with one crucial difference: The rim height.
-
Standard Bath: ~540mm high.
-
Low Level Bath: ~430mm high.
It might sound like a small difference, but lowering the step by 100mm+ (4 inches) dramatically shifts your centre of gravity. It makes balancing on one leg significantly easier and safer.
2 Ways We Install Low Level Baths
Depending on your home’s structure, there are two ways to achieve this safer height.
1. The Dedicated “Low Profile” Tub
We replace your old bath with a specialist model designed to sit lower to the ground.
-
The Design: The internal depth is maintained (so you still get a full soak), but the feet and waste trap are recessed to drop the rim height.
-
Best For: Any bathroom (Ground floor or Upstairs).
2. The “Sunken” Installation (The Designer Trick)
If you love your existing bath style but hate the height, we can sometimes sink the bath into the floor structure.
-
The Method: We cut into the floorboards and adjust the timber joists to sit the bath lower into the floor void.
-
The Result: The rim sits much lower relative to your feet. It looks incredibly high-end and spa-like.
-
⚠️ The Warning: This is difficult on Concrete Floors (Ground floor). It requires digging out concrete, which adds cost. It is best suited for homes with Timber Floors.
Important: Who is this NOT for? (Safety Check)
We value honesty over sales. A Low Level Bath is NOT suitable if:
- You use a Wheelchair: You cannot slide from a wheelchair into a low bath. You need a Wet Room or a specialist Power-Lift Bath.
- You cannot stand up from a low chair: If you struggle to get off a low sofa, you will struggle to get out of a low bath. You need a Walk-In Bath with a higher seat.
Low Level vs. Walk-In Bath: The Comparison
| Feature | Low Level Bath | Walk-In Bath (With Door) |
| Entry Method | Step Over (Low Step) | Walk In (Through Door) |
| Step Height | Approx 430mm | Approx 150mm – 200mm |
| Appearance | Standard / Modern | Specialist / Accessible |
| Family Use | Excellent | Good (but has door mechanism) |
| Best For | Mild Mobility Issues | Moderate to Severe Mobility |
Our Verdict:
-
Choose a Low Level Bath if you can still lift your leg but want to reduce the risk.
-
Choose a Walk-In Bath if lifting your leg is painful or dangerous. (See our Walk-In Bath Guide).
Safety Features We Add to Low Level Baths
Just because it looks like a standard bath doesn’t mean it lacks safety features. We recommend adding:
- Anti-Slip Coating: Standard acrylic is slippery when wet. We apply a specialist permanent anti-slip treatment or choose a bath with a textured base (R-Rated).
- Discreet Grab Rails: Chrome or matte black rails installed at the entry point to give you a steadying hand as you step over.
- Powered Bath Lifts: Because the bath is lower, getting up from the bottom might be harder. A belt lift (like the Bath Knight) pairs perfectly with a low level bath to lower and raise you gently.

How Much Does a Low Level Bath Cost? (2026)
Because these baths are mechanically simpler than “door” baths, they are often cheaper.
-
Supply & Installation: £2,500 – £4,500.
-
Includes: Removal of old bath, new plumbing, tiling repair, and installation.
-
-
Cost of “Sinking” a bath: £1,500 – £3,000 (Labour intensive due to floor joist work).
-
Note: If this is for a chronic condition (e.g. Arthritis), you may be eligible for VAT Exemption, saving 20%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will a low bath be too shallow?
A: No. Modern low profile bathtubs are clever. They are designed to sit lower to the floor externally, but the internal depth is the same as a standard tub. You still get a deep soak.
Q: Can I install a shower over it?
A: Yes. In fact, it is safer than a standard shower-bath because the step in/out is lower. We can fit a glass screen to create a versatile family bathroom.
Q: Will it devalue my home?
A: Absolutely not. Unlike a clinical “disabled” bathroom, a stylish easy access bath looks like a modern design feature. It appeals to families with children (easier to wash them) as well as the elderly.
