Level-access bathing explained

What Is a Disabled Wet Room?

A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom where the entire floor and walls are tanked (sealed), with the floor gently sloping to a drain. Unlike a standard shower, there is no tray. The floor is completely level with the rest of the room.

This makes wet rooms the most accessible bathing option available. They are ideal for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, and anyone who needs a carer’s help.

Standard Shower: Step or raised tray: trip risk, limited wheelchair access

Disabled Wet Room: Fully level floor: zero trip hazard, full wheelchair access

Designed for Dorset homes

Wet Rooms for Dorset’s Homes

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have one of the highest concentrations of bungalows and purpose-built retirement flats in the country, alongside Victorian and Edwardian villas, inter-war semis and stone cottages in rural Dorset. Each needs a different approach to drainage and waterproofing, and upstairs flats in particular need careful tanking. Our team designs level-access wet rooms for every property type across Bournemouth and Dorset, planning the installation around the building you actually have.

Every wet room we install in Bournemouth is surveyed, designed and project-managed by EA Mobility, who cover the whole of the UK, so one company is accountable for the finished result.

EA Mobility were recommended to me for fitting a wet room and I am glad they were, as I have found them to be excellent all round. They made the whole process as simple and easy as possible; from the initial site visit to the final fitting of the grab rails. They even left us with plenty of loo rolls , which after the Covid scarcity was a lovely touch. A special mention must be made to Robert for his patience keeping me up to date, and to Adam for doing a lovely job. Many thanks EA Mobility! Job's a good'un!

Highly recommend Our initial contact with Robert at EA Mobility was most positive and he arranged a meeting for us with Kevin. The meeting was extremely helpful, no pressure, just excellent guidance and some sound advice. The design was agreed to meet our requirements. EA were able to accommodate our tight time schedule which was greatly appreciated. Sean, the surveyor, visited us to check for any hurdles the fitter may encounter. On the start date all the shower materials were delivered and safely stored an hour before Dan, the fitter, was due to arrive. After his initial assessment of the situation he set to work immediately. He was so organised, ensuring carpets and flooring were protected. Dan made a number of changes to our existing plumbing to ensure a perfect fit for the new installation. Before he left each evening, he cleaned the area and left everything neat and tidy. He was punctual, hard working, took great pride in his work. He was a pleasure to have on site. A credit to the organisation. We are delighted with the results and that we chose EA.

Very happy. Efficient process end to end from design to technical survey & install, all made easy by the excellent team. Mum was particularly happy with Craig the main installer who was very patient, accommodating, leaving the space clean & tidy throughout the process. Solution focused overcoming & resolving a tricky technical challenge. Great communication from the whole team both on and offsite. End result looks great. Would definitely recommend.

Following a spinal cord injury and the purchase of a property which needed extensive work and basically a full house renovation to ensure it met my needs for accessibility and living alone as a wheelchair user, EA mobility have changed my life. I can’t thank them enough for the work they completed the end result was 10x better than I was expecting. The whole process was as smooth as you can expect really, excellent communication and they went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the project. These guys are A1 and I would recommend to anyone in need of a home renovation or adaptations, Solid workers and no messing from start to finish. Thanks again lads!

E A mobility were excellent- everything as promised. The work was completed in 3 weeks, as promised, with minimal disruption and mess. Everything was left tidy afterwards. All the people involved were excellent, especially Darren who did most of the work. We had an outside wall built and a partition wall to create the wet room. The wet room looks good and works well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does wet room installation take in Bournemouth?

A standard wet room conversion in Bournemouth typically takes 5–7 working days from start to finish. More complex projects may take slightly longer. We’ll always give you a clear timeline upfront before work begins.

Can any bathroom be converted to a wet room?

In most cases, yes. Our surveyors assess your existing bathroom during the free home visit and design a bespoke solution that works within your space. Even compact bathrooms in older Bournemouth properties can be converted effectively.

Do I need planning permission for a wet room in Bournemouth?

Generally, no. Internal bathroom conversions do not require planning permission. There may be Building Regulations considerations, which our installation team handles as part of the service.

Is a wet room suitable for wheelchair users?

Absolutely. A wet room is the most wheelchair-friendly bathing option available. Our wheelchair-accessible wet rooms are designed with full turning radius compliance and reinforced walls for grab rails.
