A mobility bathroom is a long-term change to how someone lives at home, so it is worth an hour of checking before you choose who does it. These ten checks work for any company, including us.
In short: choose a company that specialises in bathrooms for older and disabled people, is vetted by an independent scheme such as Which? Trusted Traders, visits your home for free, shows you the design before you commit, gives a fixed written quote, and guarantees the installation in writing. Avoid anyone who pushes you to sign on the day.
The 10 checks
- They specialise in accessible bathrooms. A general bathroom fitter can tile a wall. A mobility specialist knows the floor gradients for level access, where grab rails must go, how much turning space a wheelchair needs, and how to plan for a carer.
- They are independently vetted. Look for Which? Trusted Traders, a Trading Standards-approved scheme that checks a business before it can join. Check the company’s profile on the scheme’s own website, not just a logo on theirs.
- The home visit is free and has no obligation. You should not pay to find out what you need. A good visit takes about an hour and looks at the room, the floor, the water pressure and how the person uses the bathroom.
- They ask about the person, not just the room. Who will use it, how they move, whether they use a frame, a wheelchair or a shower chair, and whether someone helps them. If those questions are not asked, the design will be guesswork.
- You see the design before you agree. A 3D drawing shows where the shower, seat, rails and controls will sit, so you can change things on screen rather than after the work.
- The quote is fixed and in writing. It should list what is included: removing the old suite, plumbing, electrics, waterproofing, wall finish, flooring, fittings and waste removal. Ask what could change the price.
- The installation guarantee is in writing. Read what it covers, how long it lasts and whether it is personal to you. Manufacturers’ product warranties are separate and usually shorter.
- The people in your home are DBS-checked. This matters when the person living there is older or vulnerable.
- They explain VAT relief. Adaptations for someone with a long-term illness or disability are usually zero-rated. A specialist will explain who qualifies and handle the short declaration form. See our guide to VAT relief on mobility bathrooms.
- Recent reviews mention the things you care about. Look for reviews that talk about tidiness, timekeeping and how the installers treated an elderly or disabled relative, on more than one site.
Questions to ask on the phone or at the visit
| Ask | A good answer |
|---|---|
| How long will the work take? | A clear number of working days, and the dates you will be without a shower. As a guide, a walk-in shower usually takes 2 to 5 working days, a wet room 5 to 7 and a walk-in bath 1 to 4. |
| What happens if the floor or pipes are not what you expect? | They explain how they check at the survey, and that any change is agreed with you before it is done |
| Who do I call if something goes wrong after you leave? | One named company and phone number, backed by a written guarantee |
| Can I see the design before I decide? | Yes, on screen at the visit |
| Do I have to decide today? | No. You get a written quote to think about |

Warning signs
- A “today only” discount, or pressure to sign at the visit.
- A price given without anyone looking at the room.
- No written guarantee, or a guarantee on the products only.
- No independent reviews, or reviews on one site only.
How to compare quotes
Put the quotes side by side and compare what is included, not just the total. A product price with “installation extra” is not comparable to a fixed supply-and-fit price. Check that each one includes removing the old bath or shower, waterproofing, the wall finish, flooring, the seat and rails, electrics if needed, and taking the waste away. Our cost guides explain what a fair quote should cover for walk-in showers, wet rooms and walk-in baths.
How EA Mobility does it
EA Mobility is a family-run company, and the family has more than 20 years’ experience in accessible bathrooms. We design and install wet rooms, walk-in showers and walk-in baths throughout the UK, and have been a Which? Trusted Trader for eight consecutive years. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation home visit by a DBS-checked assessor. You see the design in 3D and get a fixed written quote to consider in your own time; nothing is sold on the day. The installation is covered by our Lifetime Installation Guarantee, and we explain 0% VAT relief and complete the form for you if you qualify. You can read what customers say on our reviews page.
If you are a case manager, solicitor or occupational therapist choosing a supplier for a client, our guide to accredited home adaptation partners covers the documentation and checks to ask for.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a mobility bathroom company?
Choose a specialist in bathrooms for older and disabled people that is independently vetted, offers a free home visit, shows you a design before you commit, gives a fixed written quote and guarantees the installation in writing. Avoid pressure to sign on the day.
Should I use a mobility specialist or a general bathroom fitter?
If the bathroom has to work for someone with reduced mobility, a specialist is safer. They plan level access, drainage gradients, grab rail positions and turning space, which a general fitter may not.
How many quotes should I get?
Two or three is sensible. Compare what each quote includes, not just the total, and check each company’s guarantee and reviews.
Is a free home visit really free?
It should be. A reputable company visits, measures and designs at no cost and leaves you a written quote with no obligation.
What should a mobility bathroom guarantee cover?
The installation work itself, in writing, for a stated period. Manufacturers’ warranties on the shower, tray or bath are separate.
Do I need an occupational therapist first?
Not for a private installation. A good company assesses needs at the home visit, and will follow an occupational therapist’s recommendations if you already have them.
