The “Peacekeeper”: How to Please Everyone with One Bathroom

Renovating a bathroom is often a battle of compromise.

  • You might need a safe, low-level bath to soothe aching joints.

  • Your Partner/Family might prefer a quick, powerful shower in the morning.

  • The Problem: You only have space for one.

In the past, you had to choose. But in 2026, the Walk-In Shower Bath (combined unit) is the fastest-growing trend in UK bathroom design.

At EA Mobility, we install these for households that need versatility. It gives you the safety of a specialist walk-in tub and the convenience of a modern shower enclosure, all in the same footprint.

What is a Walk-In Shower Bath?

It looks like a stylish modern bathtub, but it has two secret weapons:

  1. The Door: A watertight glass or composite door allowing low-level entry (approx 160mm step).
  2. The Shape: One end of the bath is widened to create a spacious, flat standing area for showering.

The Result: You can step in easily to take a shower (without the slip risk of a normal tub) OR fill it up for a deep, relaxing soak.

Design Choice: P-Shape vs. L-Shape

This is a key design decision based on your bathroom style.

1. The P-Shape (Curved)

  • The Look: Soft, curved widening at the shower end.

  • Best For: Smaller bathrooms where a sharp corner might restrict movement or wheelchair turning circles. It flows better visually.

2. The L-Shape (Square)

  • The Look: A crisp, square widening at the shower end.

  • Best For: Modern, geometric bathrooms. It offers slightly more internal elbow room for showering.

A Walk-In Bath with an integrated Power Lift offers far more stability than a removable seat.

Why It Is The “Future-Proof” Gold Standard

1. Safer Showering (The Flat Floor)

Showering in a standard bath is dangerous because the bottom is narrow and curved. You stand on a slope.
A dedicated Walk-In Shower Bath has a flat, anti-slip standing zone at the shower end. It provides a stable platform for your feet, significantly reducing fall risk.

2. Carer Access (The Hinged Screen)

We use specialist Hinged Glass Screens.

  • Why? A fixed screen blocks access. A hinged screen swings outwards, allowing a carer to reach in and turn on the taps or check the temperature without getting wet or leaning over the bath.

3. Resale Value Hero

If you remove a bath to install a wet room, you might alienate buyers with young children.
A Walk-In Shower Bath keeps the “Bath” function. It is the safest option for protecting your property value in a family home market.

The “Leak” Question: Door vs. Screen

We often get asked: “Will water leak out?”

1. The Door (For Bathing)
The door opens inwards. As the bath fills, the pressure of the water pushes the door tighter against the seal. It is physically impossible for it to pop open while full.

2. The Screen (For Showering)
We use 6mm Toughened Safety Glass screens with high-performance rubber seals. Unlike cheap internet versions, ours are designed to withstand high-pressure showers without leaking onto the floor.

How Much Does It Cost? (2026)

These are specialist units that require structural rigidity (to stop the screen wobbling).

  • Supply & Installation: £4,500 – £7,000.

    • Includes: Removal of old suite, plumbing, tiling around the shower area, and fitting the screen/door .

  • Luxury Options: Adding a Powered Lift Seat or Hydrotherapy Jets can push the price to £8,000+.

  • Note: If installed for a medical need (e.g. Arthritis preventing use of a standard bath), this is VAT Exempt, saving you 20%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to wait for the water to drain after a shower?
A: No. This is the big advantage over a bath! When showering, you leave the drain open. The water flows away instantly just like a normal shower. You only have to “wait to exit” if you fill the tub for a bath.

Q: Can I use a shower seat in it?
A: Yes. Because the “P” or “L” end is wider, there is plenty of room to place a freestanding shower stool or install a fold-down wall seat.

Q: Will it fit in my alcove?
A: Most likely. They are designed to match standard UK bath lengths (1500mm, 1675mm, 1700mm). We simply swap your old bath for the new one without moving walls.
